- BACKGROUND
African Women Solidarity in short (AWS) is a non-governmental organization, a political and not profit making organization founded in the United States of America by African Women residing in that particular country.
The visionaries of this organization were prompted by
Cultural practice that embed the lives of most African Communities which do not give any room to women and girls to raise their voices to speak out about their rights.
Despite of myriads efforts undertaken by multiple stakeholders, patriarchal system in most of African Communities still silence women and girl hence the increase of physical, physiological oppression as well as economic opportunity deprivation.
The visionaries of this organization were motivated by the fact the women and girl children in African Communities express their sincere need to speak out their needs and fight for their rights. This intrinsic motivation among African girl children and women lifted up the dreamers of this NGO to found it.

- The following objectives were formulated to attain the goal of the organization:
- To advocate for the right of both voiceless women and children.
- To equip women and children.
- To equip women with technical skills for self-reliance.
- To promote awareness on African culture among people.
- To establish women’s mutual groups.
- To capacitate women discover economic opportunities for self-reliance.
- To conduct training and workshops on entrepreneurship.
- To fight against gender based violence.
- To promote reproductive health education among women and girls.

Activities of AWS are consolidated in the following thematic areas:
- EDUCATION
AWS put much focus on addressing the root main root causes of barriers to education of African young girls, marginalized boys and children in need by providing scholastic learning levels of those targeted people.
A.1 APPROACH
To enable African children, young girls and boys in different schools to attain age / grade appropriate knowledge so as to create a pathway for their future lives through the following initiatives:
- Provision of sanitary kits to girl children at schools.
- Provision of scholastic materials to pupils.
- Enrolling out of school vulnerable children pupils for non-formal education.
- Mobilizing parents for child schooling especially girls.
- GIRL CHILD RIGH PROTECTION AND PARTICIPATION
AWS program is designed to build a safe and an enabling environment that promotes girls child friendly spaces in families, communities and Institution. AWS program evisages girl child as right holders and can claim her rights. Duty bearers are accountable to ensure that girl children have non – discriminatory access to quality services and their concerns are addressed through their active participation in an empower community and active girl child functional girl child protection system.
AWS adopt child friendly accountability mechanism to reach the intended dream in this intervention.
AWS work with African communities African government and USA government institution by bridging the gaps through sensitization, mobilization, capacitation strengthening accountability mechanisms through evidences.
The following below are some of the activities AWS engage in to ensure girl child protection and participation.
- Girl child / young girl clubs in African country villages.
- Capacity building of girl children and youth.
- Interface meeting among girl children,parents community members and child protection officers.
- Combat through community mobilization and sensitization girl child early marriages.
- Utilization of existing spaces while creating new spaces for children for their participation in the matter that affects them.
- WOMEN EMPOWERMENT
In all parts of the world and Africa in particular, women are facing threats to their lives, health and wellbeing as a result of being overburdened with work and of their lack of power and influence AWS believes that full participation and partners ship of both women and men is required in productive and reproductive life as well as economically, culturally educationally and social empower women can stop their being silenced by men. Our program in empowerment include: _
- Organize women into self – help groups.
- Capacity building on women’s right, leadership and group managements, financial management.
- Workshop and training on culture issues in order to break barriers that handicap gender equality.
- Creation of family counseling centers.
- Advocate for the right of the woman that are psychologically and physically affected.
- Facilitation of soft – loans of low rate from financial institution.
- Train women in all entrepreneurial skills.
- Capacitate women with different technical skills
- ADVOCACY
Women, girl children and other vulnerable people especially children are silenced in several African communities due to the systems that they were reared in. based on that situation myriad efforts are to be done in order to speak on their behalf and at the same time to capacitate them in the search of their right. The activities that are done in this program include:
- Influencing the powerful and educating decision makers about their responsibilities to up hold the rights of women, girl children and other vulnerable people.
- Speaking out and communicating a clear message based on good evidence, directed at those who can bring about change.
- Empowering the voiceless groups to become their own agent of change.
- Seeking justice for oppressed women, girl and children.
- Doing research in order to find the real causes of social in justice in a particular community.
- Being intentional, identifying the changes the organization wants to see and the people who can deliver them.
- Setting of clear purpose that seek to alleviate vulnerability and challenge in justice by changing the systems, structure, policies, decisions, practices and attitudes that cause social in justice in African communities.
